Holiday Traditions

We at the KroBlog take great pride and passion in the knowledge that we are in touch with our readers and members. One of our most popular posts in recent history was the the one letting everyone know about the Holiday Train in Santa Cruz. In the spirit of the Holidays, I thought I would write about another Holiday Tradition in the Krozek House.

For the last four years, the Krozeks have headed up to San Francisco the weekend before Christmas to spend the night in the City. The month of December, on the weekends, is perhaps the cheapest time to stay in a 4 or 4.5 star hotel. This year we reserved adjoining rooms at the Hyatt Embarcadero on Hotwire. The rooms were $100 each/night and were super nice. Our balconies overlooked Justin Herman Plaza and the outdoor ice-skating rink.

Part of the tradition is riding the street cars and/or the cable cars. For the last two years, we have boarded a street car on the Embarcadero and headed through Fisherman's Wharf to Ghiradelli Square for a sunday. Ghiradelli Square has the best sundays on the planet. It's documented, so I won't get into defending it.

We have three young kids, about whom I have written about before, so we don't do a fancy dinner or anything. We head over to the Ferry Building and run around before grabbing a burger and fries. After dinner there's usually time to head up to Union Square to look at the massive tree and snap a few photos.

This year, Maddie and Nick were up for ice-skating so we went on Sunday morning after getting room service (another big treat for the kids).

I think we figured the whole weekend costs a cool $350 which isn't bad for a family of five, staying in a nice hotel in the Big City.

Get on it. Build tradition in your family.
