King of Kong is King of Movies
I spent a few days traveling on a buses and trains and in cabs in Japan about a week ago with a friend of mine named Bill Lan.
While on our 48 hour adventure exploring the Mt Fuji area, Bill shared a movie with me called King of Kong. On the surface it's documentary about a mild mannered, laid-off engineer, married, father of two from the Northwest who sets out to break the Donkey Kong high-score world record which had stood for over 20 years.
But, I watched this movie twice and it's about much more - it's about a person trying to be the best at something during a rough patch in his life and an organization (Twin Galaxies, the current record holder, Billy Mitchell and Billy's cronies) doing everything in its power to delegitimize this man's efforts.
It's by far the best documentary I have seen in the last two years and maybe the best movie, of any type, that I have seen in over a year.
Go rent it. It's fantastic.
