Sinko de Mayo

Waawh, waawh, waaaaawh

Most people don't know that back in 1912, Hellmann's mayonnaise was manufactured in England.

In fact, the Titanic was carrying 12,000 jars of the condiment scheduled for delivery in Vera Cruz, Mexico, which was to be the next port of call for the great ship after its stop in New York. This would have been the largest single shipment of mayonnaise ever delivered to Mexico.

But as we know, the great ship did not make it to New York. The ship hit an iceberg and sank, and the cargo was forever lost. The people of Mexico, who were crazy about mayonnaise, and were eagerly awaiting its delivery, were disconsolate at the loss. Their anguish was so great, that they declared a National Day of Mourning, which they still observe to this day.

The National Day of Mourning occurs each year on May 5th and is known, of course, as Sinko de Mayo.

Tosh, Rubbish, and Balderdash! I never heard so much tripe in all my life!

Here's a URL to the White Star manifest of the Titanic:

http://www.titanic-whitestarships.com/MGY_Cargo.htm

Aside from there being no Mayo in sight, Richard Hellmann was a German immigrant to the USA who started a New York Deli in 1905. He began selling his Mayo under the Hellmann's Blue Ribbon brand in 1912, and licensed it to Best Foods for sale on the West Coast. Best Foods and Hellmann's merged in 1932.

Best Foods began to EXPORT mayo TO the UK FROM the USA in 1961. Best Foods was bought by Unilever in 2000. Unilever was founded in in England during the 1890's, but was a soap manufacturer. The 2000 acquisition of Best Foods by Unilever was the first time Hellmann's had a direct UK ownership connection.

... what's really amazing is the total gullibility of the populace these days, don't'cha think?! :D
